The second-largest city in Tasmania after Hobart, Launceston is regularly touted as one of the most beautiful urban developments in Australia. The Victorian, Georgian and Edwardian buildings that line its pretty streets are largely responsible for this reputation. However, the highlands and alpine lakes located just north of the city and the gorgeous beaches just west of it also contribute to the city’s beauty.
Launceston attractions are plentiful with architecture being a dominant theme. The famous Georgian structure known as Franklin House is one of the more popular sights for visitors, offering opportunities for leisurely perusal of its interior and of the pretty gardens of the estate on which it sits. Elsewhere in the city, splendid old churches and 19th century mansions beg to be explored.
If you spend some time studying a Launceston map you’ll notice the numerous greenbelt areas offering pleasant respite from the urban jungle. City Park is the most famous of these and notable not only for its large open areas and lush greenery, but also for its Japanese macaque monkey enclosure and its duck pond.
In the city centre, visitors will find a wealth of amenities, among which are some excellent dining locations. Launceston restaurants benefit from the abundance of fresh produce that the city’s temperate climate affords. With a wine region just on the doorstep, you can be assured that there’s always quality vintage available to accompany the fine cuisine on offer.
Launceston accommodation options are excellent with everything from backpacker-friendly establishments to up-market four-star hotels. If you put your faith in the reputation of popular hotel chains, then the Best Western Riverside Hotel Motel is the place for you, while the Peppers Seaport and Grand Chancellor Launceston make for good local alternatives.
The city is easily reached with national carrier Qantas offering direct flights to Launceston Airport from Melbourne and Sydney. Alternatively, visitors can take the ferry from Melbourne to Devonport then transfer by road to Launceston (90 minutes).
